Clyde Sunderland
Clyde Sunderland (1900 - 1989) was a pioneer aerial photographer. He began his photography career in 1915 and his specialty in aerial photography in 1927. An Oakland, California native, he operated Sunderland Aerial Photographs from the Oakland Airport, and spent 40 years photographing the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California from the air. A life member of the Professional Photographers of San Francisco, a status shared only with Ansel Adams, Sunderland created dramatic photographs of the major events of the period and the historic changes in the Bay Area from pre- to post-war.
Upon retirement Clyde Sunderland sold his business and extensive film collection to HJW GeoSpatial, Inc., which began marketing aerial photography services under the business name Pacific Aerial Surveys. Pacific Aerial Surveys evolved from the work and business of Clyde Sunderland as is now a welcomed addition to the HJW aerial provider network.
The collection of photography by Clyde Sunderland and other great aerial photographers are available for purchase at HJW GeoSpatial Headquarters in Oakland, California.

Site Study
Researchers seeking to document landscape changes in the Bay Area have found the photographic archives at Pacific Aerial Surveys invaluable to their studies. Beginning in the early 1930s, photography was flown of the nine Bay Area counties every 2-3 years. Photographed with sophisticated aerial equipment (see specifications) the resulting photography can be inspected for the smallest detail, enlarged to wall size images, scanned into digital documents, or used to create topographic maps.
We maintain an extensive multiyear archive of photography of the nine major Bay Area counties (San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano) and good coverage of many other counties.
Normally a street address or nearest street intersection will allow us to do a site search. If you are a current client (active within the past year) all searches are free. Simply email or fax us the site description.
